Waiver Deep Cut, Week 8: Mason Taylor

Jets tight end caught two touchdowns, still sits on 92.6% of ESPN waiver wires, and nobody in the family league has noticed.

MoineauWorld Waiver Deep Cut card: Week 8, Mason Taylor. Meaghan Moineau's Dish of the Week: Taylor-Made Mason Jar Parfait. 7.4% rostered in ESPN leagues; two TDs in Week 7, targets up 3, 6, 6.

Welcome back to Waiver Deep Cut, the weekly column where a guy whose team is literally named Questionable at best tells you who to pick up. Yes, I see the irony. No, I will not be taking questions. The obvious adds are already gone or getting bid on by the people who read the same three articles you did, so let’s go digging somewhere quieter.

The Pick

Mason Taylor, TE, New York Jets. He’s a free agent in The family league part 2 right now, and he’s rostered in just 7.4% of ESPN leagues (up 3.3 points this week). Over on Sleeper he was one of the most-added players of the last 48 hours, so the secret is leaking. Grab him before it’s a flood.

Why bother? In Week 7 against Miami he caught 5 of 6 targets for 62 yards and two touchdowns, and threw in a two-point conversion for good measure. That was 25.2 points in our scoring. PFF gave him a 93.3 offensive grade, tops among tight ends that week. The trend is the real story, though: his targets went 3, 6, 6 in the three games since he returned in Week 5, and FantasyPros has him running a route on 58.8% of dropbacks with a 15% target share. ESPN projects him for 8.7 points against the Raiders in Week 8, which at tight end is basically a lottery ticket that also pays out in scratch-offs.

The honest risk: two touchdowns is not a weekly thing, and rookie Kenyon Sadiq is still eating some of the snaps. A route rate under 60% means some weeks he’ll be a 3-catch, 30-yard guy. But if you’re streaming tight ends (and in this league, half of you are, whether you admit it or not), that’s a floor you can live with.

Meaghan Moineau’s Dish of the Week

Mason Taylor is officially this week’s Taylor-Made Mason Jar Parfait: layered, underrated, and much better than you expected when you finally dig to the bottom. Like any good parfait, the best stuff (two touchdowns) is hiding under the yogurt.

The recipe is still in Meaghan’s test kitchen; her new site is coming soon at meaghanmoineau.com.

Honorable Mentions

  • Antonio Williams, WR, Washington (13.3% rostered on ESPN, projected 8.2): With Terry McLaurin out for the season, the third-round rookie led Washington’s receivers with 45 snaps in Week 6, and the coaching staff says more looks are coming. Sunday night against the Eagles could be a shootout.
  • Chig Okonkwo, TE, Washington (12% rostered, projected 8.3): Same McLaurin-sized hole, same Eagles game. If Taylor gets scooped, this is your backup plan.

As always, the pick gets graded in Tuesday’s recap. A hit earns a Chef’s Kiss. A bust is a Flat Pancake. And start your kickers.
