Superbowl Chili: A Family Tradition That Scores Every Time
As the crisp chill of February settles in and the excitement of the Superbowl electrifies our living room, there’s one game-day tradition that’s been a constant in our household—our Superbowl Chili. This isn't just a dish; it's a family legacy passed down through generations, a recipe that transforms a football gathering into a cherished family reunion.
I remember sitting on the kitchen counter as a child, watching my dad meticulously prepare the ingredients. The smell of diced onions sizzling in olive oil would waft through the house, drawing everyone into the kitchen like moths to a flame. Dad would tell stories of how his father taught him the secret to the perfect chili: a delicate balance of spices and patience.
Ingredients:
- Canned black beans- Diced canned tomatoes
- Carrots
- Chili powder
- Chipotle chile pepper in adobo sauce
- Cumin
- Fresh cilantro
- Garlic
- Green onions
- Kosher salt
- Lean ground beef
- Lime
- Low sodium chicken stock
- Monterey jack cheese
- Olive oil
- Yellow onions
- Dried oregano
- Sirloin steak
- Sour cream
Instructions:
1. Sear the Meats: In a large heavy pot set over high heat, sauté the ground beef and sirloin steak chunks, stirring frequently, until browned, about 8 minutes. Use a slotted spoon to remove the beef to a plate and pour off the remaining liquid.2. Sauté Vegetables: Add olive oil to the same pot and set over medium heat. When hot, add carrots, onions, and garlic, sautéing until softened, about 5 minutes.
3. Spice it Up: Return the beef to the pot and add chili powder, cumin, oregano, salt, and chopped chipotle chile; stir and cook for 1 minute. Add tomatoes and broth. Bring to a simmer, reduce heat to a gentle simmer, and cook for 30 minutes more, stirring occasionally.
4. Finish with Beans: Stir in all but 1/3 cup of black beans and cook for 5 minutes more. Mash the reserved beans with a fork and stir into the chili to give it extra body. If too thick, add as much as 1 cup additional broth and heat several minutes to warm.
5. Make-Ahead Tip: This chili can be prepared two days ahead. Cool, cover, and refrigerate. Reheat over medium heat, stirring often.
6. Serve: Ladle into bowls and garnish with green onions, cilantro, Monterey jack cheese, a squeeze of lime, and a dollop of sour cream.
